ginger.

if i had to describe in one word what makes me chinese (taiwanese) and not south african.

this is why…

1st, i use it in a lot of my cooking. ginger is part of the “holy trinity” of chinese cooking.

2nd, when i’m sick or in any sort of discomfort, i use ginger. when i start showing signs of a cold or flu, i make ginger tea. when i’m feeling nauseous, i make ginger tea. when it’s that time of the month for my gf, i make ginger tea…for her.

3rd, i rubbed ginger on my face to try stimulate hair growth when i was 15. being a typical asian, i’m not very hairy. so when all my friends where growing beards, i could still only count to 5 with the bum fluff on my chin. my mum told me ginger stimulates hair growth

i literally can’t live without it. besides point number 3 i pretty much practice the other two religiously.

does it really cure all sicknesses? well does God really exist? is there really life after death? u choose what you want to believe. but when i’m 40 and going bald. i’ll give my scalp a good ginger rub.

ps: i’m almost 30 now and still can’t grow a decent beard. though i’ve stopped rubbing ginger on my face when i turned 16 ;)

bonjour!

when it comes to food there is nothing i love more than shellfish. all kinds. prawns. crabs. lobsters. scallops. clams. oysters. and this little guy here monsieur langoustine.

this saturday i was in the market and picked up 2kilos for €15. plus a few other yummy stuff. a steal i have to say. the vendor was closing shop. It wasn’t all of a decent size. i ended up with about just over a kilo. the rest went into stock making.

u can imagine what a feast it was. but i’m always amazed at the amount of people who don’t enjoy shellfish. not just shellfish. but many other foods. perhaps it’s my culture. where food, and variety of foods, are so embedded in us i find it hard not to be curious and have a passion for it.

on my travels i’ll always want to find and try out authentic local cuisine. especially ones i’ve never heard of or tried before. it doesn’t bother me if it’s an animal or part of an animal i’ve never eaten before. i strongly believe in judging food based on it’s taste and not where it comes from. and perhaps in our culture we have some food that majority of the western world will find disgusting.

hard to say. in my opinion it’s a great shame to miss out on all the exotic food the world has to offer. at least try it once. if you don’t like how it taste. don’t order it again. if it tastes good. fantastic!
